They make the long trek with thankfulness rather than "asking" or "praying for" something they want. A striking contrast to many in our society who think they have the ear of God and can influence what will be in the physical, personal, political world, solely by their prayers.
The world is so lacking in the virtues of thanksgiving and gratitude.

Well said. Although I’m not a believer, and have a challenging time with the penitent, I can respect and admire the thankful!
Yes, thanks-giving and gratitude are wonderful devotional attitudes. I agree we need more of them!
In my old age, I have finally learned the importance of having an "attitude of gratitude" - it really is fundamental to a mature and balanced view of life, and to inner peace. Also necessary, and entirely overlooked by the modern materialistic world, is humility.
"Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly" is a pretty good rule of life. Unfortunately, it takes a long time to sink in for some of us. (Mea culpa.)
