Forgive Us, For We Know Not What We Have Done

This is beyond sad.  There are no words adequate to express the helplessness, the angst, the sorrow.  We are all to blame for this and even for those of us not practiced in prayer, a prayer of contrition is in order.

Oh those poor birds. Once they land in the muck they are never able to fly up out of it and they're doomed. They don't know to avoid it and there's nothing we can do to stop them. This is a horrible slow-motion catastrophe.

Tragic. Words fail me.

Not only that, but if they do get cleaned up, survive, and are released back into the wild, their natural instinct is to return to their home (where all the oil is!). What a sad, damned mess!
